What to Expect from Chiropractic Treatment

Chiropractic health care is based on the belief that an innate intelligence governs and organizes every aspect of our human body. The body is able to heal itself when this intelligence is able to communicate unimpeded throughout the body.

The nervous system and fascia communicate this intelligence via fluids, to each and every cell in the body. The nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord, which is located within the boney protection of the skull and vertebral/spinal column. Between each vertebra a spinal nerve passes from both sides of the spinal cord through the small canals formed by two adjoining vertebra. If the vertebrae are fixated (not moving), compressed or misaligned, there is interference to the normal nerve function, resulting in pain and eventually disease.

Chiropractors adjust the vertebra thereby restoring normal nerve function and the ability for the innate intelligence to be communicated to each and every cell in the body.

By improving the function of the nervous system, which in turn helps improve the function of all the systems in the body including the digestion, immune, endocrine and respiratory systems, Chiropractic helps to improve overall health and well-being.

What to expect
At the first consultation you will fill out a patient intake form, and the doctor will take a full history of your condition. You will then lie down on the adjusting table where the doctor will assess your spine and adjust it accordingly.

What you will feel is a gentle, low-force pressure that is applied swiftly to an area on your back or neck. At times there may be a “popping” or “cracking” sound, this is the pressure being released from the joint capsule.

The first consultation takes up to an hour, and subsequent consultations are half-an-hour or less depending on your condition.

How many sessions it takes depends on your condition; if it is a mild episode and you have been a regular chiropractic patient, it may be resolved quickly with two or three sessions. If you are first time chiropratic patient and your condition is a chronic one that has been developing or persisting over a few years then it will take more sessions to resolve. Many people with a more recent condition will respond well to twice-weekly sessions for a month.
